When One Cup of Coffee Changed a 78-Year-Old’s Life Forever
Have you ever felt this… when you see older people who should be resting comfortably at home, but instead have to go out and work hard to make a living? Every time, it’s hard not to feel a little ache in your heart.
The story we want to share today took place in Tennessee, in the United States. It is about Richard Pulley, 78. He had actually retired from selling insurance 13 years earlier. But life is never certain, is it? Suddenly Brenda, his partner of almost 56 years, lost her job.
When the main income disappeared, the bills and the cost of medicines didn’t disappear with it. And as Brenda often joked, laughing through tears, “Once you’re past your mid-seventies, there aren’t any companies lining up to hire you.”
So Richard got up out of his rocking chair and signed up as a DoorDash delivery driver, working together with Brenda. The couple made a living side by side: Brenda drove, and Richard carried the orders to the door. Some days they worked as long as 12 hours, and believe it or not, Richard had delivered 6,000 orders!
Until one day, the turning point in his life arrived… with a single cup of Starbucks coffee.
That day, Brittany Smith’s daughter had ordered a coffee to the house. When it arrived, Brittany happened to check her doorbell camera, and what she saw brought tears to her eyes…
The video showed an elderly man slowly and painfully climbing the front steps one at a time, holding the coffee bag in one hand and gripping the railing with the other to steady himself at every step. Brittany said that when she saw it, she grumbled with a mix of fondness and sympathy, “This poor old man is hauling a coffee up here for my perfectly healthy daughter!”
Brittany didn’t let the moment pass. She posted the video on social media to find him, learned that he lived just five minutes away, and went straight round to knock on his door, give him a 200-dollar tip, and hear the story of this hardworking couple.
But the power of kindness in this world didn’t stop there…
After the video went viral, hundreds of thousands of people commented asking Brittany to start a fundraiser, because everyone wanted to help Richard truly rest again. So she started a GoFundMe campaign called “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again”.
Believe it or not, within just a few days, generosity from strangers in every corner of the world was pouring in like a river!
On 20 March, Brittany and her daughter invited Richard back to the same house… to the very same steps where the doorbell camera had once captured his exhaustion. But this time he wasn’t delivering coffee. He was there to receive a check for 965,868 dollars, donated by people all over the world.
Richard accepted the check with a broad smile and eyes full of emotion, saying humbly and good-humoredly, “Everyone has been so good to me… Nine hundred sixty-five thousand dollars, that’s not bad pay at all. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.”
The loveliest part is that even though Richard and Brenda now have enough to live out their later years in comfort and without worry, Richard quietly said that he would take a week or two off until things calmed down, and then go back to doing some deliveries, just lightly, because he enjoys still being useful and helping others.
“The important thing is to do your job the best you can, and to help other people… If you help others and do the right thing, you’ll be successful.” These are the simple words of a 78-year-old man who refused to give in to fate.
Perhaps… miracles don’t come from magic. They come from one person who “refuses to give up”, and thousands of others who choose “not to look away” from the weariness of a fellow human being.
You see… this world is still a beautiful place to be.
