From a Little Glass of Lemonade by the Front Door to a Power of Sharing That Changed Thousands of Children’s Lives
Have you ever wondered… how far the small intention of one little child can grow, and how great a ripple it can create in the world?
Today we have a lovely story that will lift your heart. It is about a little girl who turned the lemonade stand outside her house into a warm embrace for children facing hardship in many states across the United States.
This story began in 2018, in Ohio. Payton Obert was only six years old. One day she saw a neighbor setting up a table to sell lemonade, and asked her mother what they were doing. When her mother explained, Payton’s eyes lit up and she said at once, “I want to do that too!”
But what made Payton’s lemonade stand different from other children’s… came from a memory in her own little heart.
Some time before, Payton had been ill and admitted to a children’s hospital. Lying in her hospital bed, scared and lonely, she received a teddy bear donated to the hospital by a kind stranger. That bear became her faithful companion, comforting her and giving her courage through a difficult time. (And to this day, that teddy bear still sits on her bed every night.)
Payton remembered that warm feeling well, and she wanted to pass it on to other children…
Payton’s very first lemonade stand was showered with love by her neighbors. In that one day she raised 768 dollars. And instead of keeping the money to buy toys for herself, this six-year-old spent every last cent on toys for the children lying ill at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, a comfort like the one she had once received.
But who could have imagined that the first glass of lemonade that day would be the start of an even greater miracle…
In the years that followed, word spread among neighbors and the community. From one small stand outside her house, friends and other families began asking to set up lemonade stands of their own under the name “Payton’s Lemonade Stand”, spreading across Ohio, Kentucky and other states. Even when the world faced a pandemic, people’s kindness never stopped.
Eight whole years later… from that first 768 dollars, the non-profit run by Payton and her family has now raised as much as 5 million dollars in funds and donated goods, shared with more than 40 charities.
This money and these donations have been turned into toys, food, clothes, beds, and school bags filled with supplies, sent to children who are ill in hospital, children experiencing homelessness, and children in foster care, to tell them… you are not facing these hardships alone. There are so many people who see you and care about you.
When someone asked Payton the secret of this great success, she answered with a bright smile that her lemonade recipe has only three ingredients: “lemonade powder, water, and love”.
And she shared a sweet thought that truly touches us grown-ups. Payton said:
“It really only takes one person to make a difference. Just go out and do good things in your community. If you see someone drop a pencil, just pick it up for them. That will brighten their day, and they’ll pass that kindness on to someone else.”
Perhaps making the world a better place doesn’t mean waiting until we are rich or have magical powers. It can begin with a small wish to see someone else smile, like Payton’s little glass of lemonade, which has added sweetness to the lives of thousands of children.
You see… this world is still a beautiful place to be.
