From a Doughnut Run to a Rescue in an Icy River: How a Stranger’s Compassion Gave a Little Dog the Chance to Go Home

Who would have thought… that an ordinary morning drive to pick up a treat with the family could become the day that changes another life forever?

Today’s story took place in the bitter cold of January in Berlin, Vermont, in the United States. It is about a family who set out to pick up some warm doughnuts, and ended up giving “the greatest warmth of all” to a dog close to drawing its last breath in an icy river.

It happened on Friday, 10 January 2025. Chris MacRitchie, a father of two, was driving his wife and son through the drive-through of a Dunkin’ doughnut shop as usual.

But as the car was moving along, his son Ace noticed something unusual near the bank of the Winooski River nearby.

In the freezing water full of chunks of ice, a dog was struggling to survive! She kept trying to claw her way up onto the ice at the edge of the bank with her front legs, again and again, but the slippery ice and the cold eating away at her strength made her slide back into the water every time… because she was almost out of energy.

In that moment, Chris didn’t think of driving on, or of just calling the authorities and waiting in his warm car. He quickly parked and ran straight to the riverbank, with his wife and son close behind.

The sight in front of them was heartbreaking. The soaked little dog was shivering and paddling in the bitterly cold water. Chris was wearing only a short-sleeved T-shirt, sweatpants and boots. He called out softly to the dog, with his wife encouraging her from behind, and without a second’s hesitation… Chris stepped straight into the freezing river!

Chris later said frankly that when he stepped in, what scared him most wasn’t the cold water at all, but “the depth”.

“My only stress at the time wasn’t having to go into freezing water, it was how deep the river was, because I had no idea whether it was 20 feet or 2 feet,” Chris said of the moment he decided. “But once I broke through the ice and my feet touched the bottom, at about waist height, I was relieved. All I thought was, OK, this isn’t too bad. It’s very cold, but this is a situation we can handle.”

Chris slowly made his way through the ice and freezing water to the exhausted dog. He gently scooped her out of the water in both arms and carried her safely back to the bank. As soon as they reached the shore, his wife wrapped the soaking dog tightly in a sweatshirt to warm her as quickly as possible.

Once the dog was safe, Chris noticed a name tag on her collar, engraved with her owner’s phone number…

The dog’s name was “Arizona”, a seven-year-old mixed-breed dog. She had run away from home on 9 January, a whole day earlier, and had spent the entire night wandering in the freezing cold.

As soon as Chris called Morgan Cerasoli, Arizona’s owner, who had been searching for her in despair… and she learned that someone had pulled her four-legged girl out of the river, Morgan couldn’t hold back her tears, and rushed straight over to bring Arizona home to her family.

Morgan spoke about what Chris had done with deep emotion: “It was brave, selfless and so admirable. It’s everything I think we as humans are meant to be… which sometimes feels so hard to find these days.”

As for Chris, our hero dad, he explained why he risked going into the freezing water that day with a simple, heartwarming answer. He has two dogs of his own at home, and he was just doing what he would hope someone else would do if his dogs were ever in danger like that… that someone would reach out and help them, just as he did.

It is true that in this vast world we may not be able to help every animal in trouble… but for Arizona that morning, the compassion and the decision of one stranger not to look away was enough to turn a freezing ending into the warmest embrace, and to let her go home alive.

Having read this, you feel a sudden warmth in your heart, don’t you? You see… this world is still a beautiful place to be.
